Librarian Preparations

Welcome, Semester at Sea faculty!

To request reserve items, make sure you use the CSU eReserve Portal.  Anything you want available for your course that you aren't bringing yourself must be requested through this portal.  This would include Books, DVDs, Book chapters, journal articles, and even webpages (which we turn to PDFs).  All electronic items will be on the ship's intranet (NextCloud)

Click here to see the "How To" request library materials written instructions.

The What and Why of Requesting Library Materials

How to Request Library Reserve Materials

Course reserve books and films. Based on funding for your voyage, we will purchase as many of your requested reserve materials as possible and will let you know of those we are unable to purchase. Keep in mind that most Semester at Sea-owned DVDs are housed at CSU and assembled for each voyage and shipped by Reserve request.

Course readings. We will collect electronic copies of each journal article, book chapter, and web page requested through the library reserve system, contingent on copyright regulations.  Individual web pages are saved to the ship intranet as a PDF and will be available without internet access. The pages may lose some images or formatting but the text should remain readable.

CSU will obtain accessibility and copyright for anything placed in the course reserves system.

Faculty Preparations

Here are some tips to help you prepare for the unique shipboard environment.

Films.  Only films with public performance rights (PPR) or explicit producer's/author's consent can be shown on the CCTV network for non-curricular purposes.  For curricular purposes, any faculty-assigned film must be listed on the course syllabus in order to ensure the film is available in the shipboard library and in order to allow it to be shown on the CCTV network.

Images and web videos.   To be successful in the classroom, download any required large images.  Personal laptops can easily interface with classroom projection systems.  Due to the limitations of shipboard Internet access, high-bandwidth sites such as YouTube will not be a reliable resource during the voyage.  Make sure you bring what you need with you to the ship.

Access to Shipboard Catalog

To locate physical items (books, DVDs) in the Semester at Sea library collection before the voyage.

Unfortunately, you will not have prior access to the ship's digital catalog.

You will be provided a list of library resources from ISE when you are given your faculty preparation materials.
