Work with your librarian
Your librarian is happy to help incorporate information literacy skills and concepts into your class. If you have a research based assignment you may schedule a library instruction session to help your students get started with their research. Other ideas for incorporating information literacy into your class include:
- Have your students compare and contrast three sources of information about the same topic. Have them look at a web site, a magazine and a scholarly journal article to help them discrimate the type of information that each provides.
- Have your students "Google" the author of one of your Course Reserve readings to see what they can find out.
- Have your students paraphrase their course reserve readings and watch for the temptation to simply copy'n'paste without thinking

Standard One – Know what kind of information is needed
What the student needs to do:
- Define and articulate the information need.
- Select the most appropriate investigative methods for researching the topic.
- Identify a variety of formats and sources in which anthropological and sociological information may appear.
- Consider the costs and benefits of acquiring the needed information.
Standard Two – Access needed information effectively, efficiently, and ethically
What the student needs to do:
- Select the most appropriate sources and databases for accessing and obtaining the needed information.
- Construct, implement, and refine well-designed search strategies that use a variety of methods to find information.
- Keep track of the information and its sources.
Standard Three – Evaluate information and its sources critically; Incorporate selected information into knowledge base and value system
What the student needs to do:
- Summarize the main ideas to be extracted from the information gathered and synthesize main ideas to construct new concepts.
- Apply appropriate criteria for evaluating both the information and its source.
- Compare new knowledge with prior knowledge to determine the value added, contradictions, or other unique characteristics of the information and take steps to reconcile differences.
Standard Four – Use information effectively and ethically to accomplish a specific purpose
What the student needs to do:
- Apply new information and research results to the planning, creation, and revision of a particular project, paper, or presentation.
- Communicate the project, paper, or presentation effectively to others.
