The Guggenheim Hall of the Household Arts, located east of the north entrance to the Oval, opened for classes in the fall of 1910. Through the efforts of Eliza P. Routt, funds for a building to house the activities of the Home Economics Department were provided by Simon Guggenheim, a United States Senator from Colorado. Eliza Routt did not live to see the completion of this project, and a stained glass window was placed in Guggenheim Hall to honor her memory. Guggenheim Hall holds the distinction of being the first building on the campus to be named for a person.
Specifically constructed for home economics training with specialized laboratories, classrooms, and offices, this building contributed significantly to the advancement of home economics education. Later additions included a unique high-altitude cooking laboratory in 1927, the enclosure of the south side open patio in 1939 (to add classroom space), and a remodeling project in the spring of 1950.
After home economics work was moved to the Gifford Building in 1975, the Department of Construction Management occupied this structure and benefited from a 2003 interior restoration and modernization project. This afforded current students the opportunity to participate in work on a historic building to restore its original features and yet fully modernize the structure . In 2007 Guggenheim became the first building on any university campus to receive the CI Silver certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, which sets the nationwide standard for energy-efficient “green” buildings.
