1231 Center Avenue Mall

The “Liberal Arts Building” was designed by James M. Hunter and opened for the fall quarter 1963.  The Hensel Phelps Construction Company of Greeley built this combination classroom and office building.  This building was the center for courses offered by the Departments of English, Philosophy, Education, Foreign Languages and Speech.  It featured an “Asian-style garden” in the courtyard.  The site for this building once was occupied by some of the pig pens on the old College Farm.

On October 21, 1978, the Liberal Arts Building was renamed the “Willard O. Eddy Building” to honor the retired philosophy professor who served on the faculty from 1937 until 1974, dying later on November 23, 1993.  Following additional remodeling and upgrades, the building was again renamed “Willard O. Eddy Hall” on September 23, 1994. This 69,457 square foot building now housed classrooms, lecture halls and faculty offices for the Departments of English, Philosophy, Foreign Languages and Literature, and Communication Studies of the College of Liberal Arts.

In the 1997 flood, the Eddy Building was hit hard when window wells overflowed and water poured into the building through the west-facing entrance.  Faculty books, papers, and equipment was destroyed as the lower level of Eddy was submerged. Nevertheless, enough repairs were made to enable classes to be held the next month.  It was a stopgap measure; more work would be necessary.

A bond issue approved by the state legislature in 2007 was to provide for extensive renovation of the Eddy Building.  Unfortunately, the economic recession put an end to that plan. The economy stabilized and in 2012, it was announced that a planned revitalization project had been developed.  It was designed to enhance safety, give needed ADA and energy efficiency upgrades, and give improvement to the overall building layout and aesthetics.  Designed by 4240 Architecture, Inc. of Denver, this $12 million project took place from the summer of 2014 until the fall of 2015.  Faculty and staff offices were relocated to Johnson Hall, the Behavioral Sciences Building, and Ingersoll Hall during the months the construction work was being done by the Pinkard Construction Company of Lakewood.  Classes were held in other buildings during this time.  In 2015, work was completed, and the occupants of the building moved into their renovated building.
