Things You Can Do

One of the first things people think of when talking about sustainability is recycling. Recycling is a something easy anyone can do to help. However, there are two things to remember:

  1. Not everything can be recycled and contamination in recycling is a huge issue. Check out Fort Collins Recycling Guide as well as their list of Who Recycles What. This article from CityLab has some great information.
  2. Recycling should come after Reduce and Reuse! This is true for products as well as food and water.  Reduce Reuse Recycle animated GIF created by foxyboxysolutions on DeviantArt

Other sustainability tips:

  • Lightbulbs! LEDs > CFLs > Incandescent.
  • Wash your clothes in cold water (this makes clothes last longer, and reduces energy use - a double win!).
  • Line dry your clothes.
  • Make sure heating and cooling vents are not obstructed.
  • Adjust your temperature settings, especially when you are not at home.
  • Make use of your blinds! During the day: open to let heat in during the winter and close to keep heat out in the summer.
  • Turn off and unplug electronic devices when not in use for extended periods.
  • Make use of the power settings on electronic devices.
  • Check for local programs and rebates - some for Fort Collins can be found at: http://www.fcgov.com/enviro/

Food

What you eat can make a difference in how sustainable you live.

How Recycling Works

Transportation

According to the EPA, "greenhouse gas emissions from transportation accounted for about 27% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions" in 2013.
