Mendeley

A guide to setting up and using the Mendeley citation manager

Inserting Citations into a Document

There are two (2) ways to insert a citation into Mendeley. The citation will insert where your cursor is placed when you select Insert Citation.

From Microsoft Word, go to the References tab and select Insert Citation from the Mendeley section.

In the pop-up box, search your reference library by entering search terms or author names, then select the reference(s) you want to insert and select OK.

Another method (this method works really well if you have a folder with citations that you intend to use for a certain paper), is to go to the References tab and select Insert Citation from the Mendeley section, then select Go to Mendeley in the pop-up box. From your Mendeley library, you can select the reference(s) you want to insert and then select the Cite icon in the toolbar to insert the citations into the document.

Citation Styles

Choose / Add a Citation Style

In Mendeley, select View and Citation Styles. If your preferred citation style already appears in the list, select it. If your preferred citation style does not appear in the list, select More Styles. Then, search and select your preferred style. This style will not always appear in the Citation Style dropdown in Mendeley and in the Mendeley plug-in in Microsoft Word.

Change Citation Styles

To change citation styles, select the citation or bibliography in the Word document and choose a new citation style from the dropdown in the Mendeley Word plug-in. All citations and bibliography items will update.

Create / Manage a Bibliography

Create a Bibliography

Once you have entered citations into your Word document, select Insert Bibliography in the Mendeley Word plug-in to generate a bibliography.

Edit Bibliography Items

If you notice that some references may need to be edited, you must edit the references from within Mendeley and then select Refresh in the Mendeley Word plug-in. The citation and bibliography will update with any changes.

To easily navigate to the citation you want to edit, select the citation in Word, then click Edit Citation in the plug-in (where it normally says 'Insert Citation'). In the pop-up box, select Go to Mendeley, which will navigate to the reference record in your Mendeley library for editing. After you are finished editing the reference, go back to the Word document and select Refresh from the Mendeley Word plug-in.
