There are several options that can help you use Mendeley more efficiently:
- File Organizer: Copy PDFs that you import into Mendeley into another folder and rename them
- Watched Folders: Automatically import PDFs that are added to certain folders
Note that these settings are go-forward changes and do not apply retroactively to previously downloaded or imported PDFs.
File Organizer
The File Organizer setting does two (2) things:
- Copies PDFs from Mendeley into another folder
- Renames the copied PDFs with any combination of the Author, Title, Journal, and Year
To set up File Organizer, go to Tools > Options and select File Organizer. Select the checkbox next to Organize my files and select (or create) a destination folder for the PDFs by choosing Browse. Select the checkbox next to Rename document files and choose the combination of Author, Title, Journal, and Year that you would like the PDF to be renamed as (this information is taken from the reference record).
Watched Folders
Watched folders will (going forward) automatically import PDFs added to them into Mendeley. For PDFs that are published with DOIs on the first few pages, Mendeley will try to automatically retrieve the citation information for the PDF.
To set up a watched folder, go to Tools > Options and select Watched Folders, then select the folder(s) you want to watch.
Note that these settings are go-forward changes and do not apply retroactively to previously downloaded or imported PDFs.
