ORCID

This guide will show you all the great benefits of having an ORCID iD and how to make the most of it.

Federal Funder Requirements and ORCID

In 2020, NIH, AHRQ, and CDC grant submissions required ORCID iDs (NOT-OD-19-109). As of Fall 2023, NSF proposal submissions also require ORCID iDs. By the end of 2027, all other federal agencies will likely follow suit with the 2022 Office of Science and Technology Policy Public Access Memo, which requires all federal funders to obtain a unique digital persistent identifier meeting the common/core standards defined in the NSPM-33 Implementation Guidance, which ORCID iDs satisfy.

Instructions for connecting your ORCID iD to your eRA Commons account are provided here.

Note: If you have already participated in federally-funded research, awards, or training programs, you will likely already have an ORCID iD. Be sure to find your assigned identifier before registering for a second one. Visit the Researcher FAQ to learn how to find your profile and iD.

Connect ORCID to My NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology)

Your MyNCBI account connects your data with federal funding agencies like NIH and NSF. This connection allows you to use ORCID to populate your SciENcv and connect it to your eRA Commons account.

  1. Ensure that your ORCID account is set up to display current scholarly works (publications, grants, peer review, etc.).
  2. Select "login" from the upper right corner of the PubMed Homepage.
  3.  Select a method to sign in or create an NCBI Account. Select “more login options” to sign in using your CSU credentials.
  4. Once signed in, you will see your username in the top right corner. Click on your username and “Account Setting.”
  5. Click "Linked Accounts" to add ORCID from “Available 3rd-party partners”.
  6. You will be prompted to enter your ORCID username and password and authorize the connection.

Integrate SciENcv and eRACommons with ORCID

Using ORCID to populate the NIH or NSF Biosketch

SciENcv is a CV tool that helps you manage grant applications, biosketch information, and progress reports linked to federal grants. Researchers can link their ORCID iD to their SciENcv profile to easily import data with just a click instead of manually inputting all the required information.

  1. Populate your ORCID profile with the relevant information you wish to import into the biosketch. This can include Biography/Personal Statement, Education, Employment/Positions, and Scholarly Works.
  2. From your MyNCBI Dashboard, find the SciENcv tile under your account. Click on “Manage SciENcv” to create a new document.
  3. If you have not set up a profile, click “edit” to input your display name, and connect your ORCID profile under “Optional Information.” This will allow you to import the required fields available in your ORCID profile without manually retyping the information. This will only take a few seconds if you have already connected your account.A screenshot of editing your mini profile in My NCBI
  4. When creating a new document, you can now choose ORCID as an external data source. This will automatically fill in the first three sections of your biosketch with available ORCID data. You will also have the option to select relevant citations from either your My Bibliography or ORCID account.A screenshot showing the screen to create a new document in using Biosketch.
