How to identify appropriate archives for your research
How to access historical materials and research at an archives - HOW WE DESCRIBE HISTORICAL MATERIALSCSU Libraries’ Digital and Archive Services provides online and in-person access to materials created by people and organizations from the past. Archives mostly contain primary sources, which are unpublished, one-of-a-kind letters, photographs, recordings, and other materials used for historical research. We (archivists) want you to use them, so we create guides called finding aids that provide context information and an inventory for each archival collection. We also make available online materials that we have either digitized or received digitally, and we add searchable descriptive information called metadata.
- How can you help archivists to help you? Reference service from our side of the desk Archives @ PAMAVisiting an archives has something in common with using any public service. In each interaction with a service or a staff person, you’re seeing the small tip of a very large iceberg. Behind-the-scenes people, tasks, and systems that you may never see all unite to affect the experience you’ll have.
- A Preliminary Guide to Online Resources and Western History Research Collectionshe sites and links below provide discovery tools as well as digital surrogates for primary sources. Some, such as the Internet Archive, give access to "born digital" sources. In this first draft, we have
focused on institutions within the United States and have not attempted to list museums, many of which do make digital surrogates available.
About...
Colorado State University Libraries Archives & Special Collections department collects rare and unique materials in subject areas that support the University’s current research and education mission. The rare book collection contains over 20,000 original materials, including antiquities, fine bindings, and primary and secondary resource materials donated by individuals and organizations.
Our systematic program, initiated in 1974, has been dedicated to acquiring pieces that represent significant periods, media, processes, places, and individuals in the history of the written and printed word. This commitment has resulted in a collection with a historical range that spans from cuneiform tablets over 4000 years old to modern first editions, underscoring the historical significance of our collection.
The department focuses on research use, access, and instruction for rare materials in various collecting areas, including agriculture, Colorado State University, equine medicine, posters, publications, 19th-century American West documents, rare maps, book arts, and water resources. The collection also features numerous Named Collections, showcasing second-wave feminist press literature, rare music texts, Vietnam War literature, Germans from Russia history, and more.
