CO150 - College Composition

Tutorial Information

The Libraries has developed a new, comprehensive online tutorial to support library instruction for CO150. This tutorial covers article types, constructing a search, searching the library databases, and citing articles. This tutorial will replace face-to-face instruction starting in Fall 2022.

This is an image of the homepage of the tutorial.

If students successfully complete the tutorial (80% accuracy), they will automatically receive a certificate of completion that they can download as a PDF.

Importing the NEW Library Module into Your Canvas Course

The CO150 library tutorial has been split into two parts for Spring 2023 to address grading issues experienced in the Fall 2022 pilot. In Canvas, the tutorial is now packaged as a module containing two parts: the tutorial walkthrough and a Canvas quiz.

Instructions

  1. Go to the Canvas course homepage for which you'd like to import the module. *
  2. In the right-side instructor's menu, click on "Import from Commons." *
  3. Search for “CO150 Library Research” in the Commons interface. You should find one option created by Renae Watson.
  4. Select the “CO150 Library Research – Tutorial & Quiz” module.
  5. On the page for the module, click on the blue “Import/Download” button.
  6. Select the appropriate course in the pop-up side menu, and then click “Import into Course.”
  7. You should now see the module in your course, containing two pieces: the tutorial (within a Canvas page) and the library module quiz. You can now move these pieces into an appropriate weekly or topic module, whatever fits best within your course.
  8. If you move the tutorial and quiz pieces out of the “CO150 Library Research – Tutorial & Quiz” module, you can delete the empty module. Click on the three dots on the right side of this module title and click on “Delete” in the drop-down menu that appears.

*Please follow steps 1 & 2 exactly to ensure the quiz imports correctly.

Need Help?

If you would like help with adding or removing the library module in your course(s), please contact Renae Watson, Online Learning & Student Success Librarian.

You can add a librarian to your course using the Librarian role in Canvas. Adding folks as Librarians allows them to assist with editing course modules/materials, but ensures they cannot view class discussions or grades.

Removing the Old Library Tutorial Assignment from Your Canvas Course

  1. Go to your CO150 course in Canvas and then go to Assignments in the course menu.
  2. Look for “CO150 – Getting Started with Library Research” in the list of assignments.
  3. Once you find the correct assignment block, click on the three dots on the right side. In the drop-down menu that appears, click on “Delete.”
  4. If Canvas asks you to confirm deletion, click “OK.”

OLD Tutorial Assignment Information

NOTE: We recommend using the new library instruction module, rather than the old, all-in-one tutorial assignment, for best results. See above for instructions on adding the new module and removing the old tutorial assignment.

Grading and Canvas

What part of the tutorial is graded?

The grade is derived from the “Quiz Yourself” block in the “What did I learn?” section of the tutorial.

How can students ensure their work will be graded?

Students must complete the tutorial within the Canvas assignment area (see below for more information). Students must answer all six questions and reach the Quiz Results/Create Certificate slide at the end for the quiz to be automatically graded in Canvas.

What are the default assignment settings right now?

  • The quiz is worth 10 points.
  • The grade will display as a percentage.
  • Students have unlimited attempts to pass the quiz.

How can I change the grade to display as points instead of a percentage?

Go to Assignments > "CO150 – Getting Started with Library Research" > Edit Assignment Settings > Display Grade as… and then change that to Points instead of Percentage. Make sure you hit the Save button at the bottom!

What if a student needs to complete the tutorial outside of Canvas, on the Libraries website; how can they still receive credit?

The student would need to save the PDF certificate of completion they receive at the end of the tutorial and provide it to you. There is no way to retrieve individual quiz grades from the Libraries website version of the tutorial.

The student and I followed all of the instructions/steps for Canvas auto-grading, and there’s still no grade. What do I do?

Have the student submit a certificate of completion, instead, if the grade is needed sooner. Then, please contact Renae Watson, Online Learning & Student Success Librarian, so we can troubleshoot.
