PC and Macs

PCs and Macs

PCs and Macs should be addressed within 3 to 5 business days after being checked into the repair center. These machines are serviced on a first-come/first-serve basis. Once we are able to isolate the issue with the computer, we will call the customer and give them a recommendation on what service the computer will need. If parts need to be ordered, the parts will take between 3 and 5 business days for transit and processing time to get to the CRC. Parts are installed in machines when they are received and the customer is called to let them know the repair is complete. No parts are ordered without prior customer authorization unless the computer falls under AppleCare warranty or an Apple Quality Program and are of no cost to the customer.

Expedited Repairs

Expedited repairs may be available to a customer, but please call the CRC to make sure before checking a device in for an expedited repair. Expedited repairs move the customer to the next in line to be diagnosed for an additional $25 on top of any other costs (even warranty). It doesn’t guarantee the device will be looked at the same day, but it does ensure they are next in line. If someone wants an expedited repair be sure to put a note in the ticket, put a second sticker on the computer that says "Expedited repair", and walk the computer back to repair so that they are aware an expedited repair has been checked in.

Water Damage Phone Repairs

Due to the extent of damage that water can cause it may take longer than normal to diagnose water damaged phones. It may take 3 to 4 days before we know exactly what components were affected by the water and which ones need to be replaced. Be sure that the customer is aware of this possible extended diagnostic time before they check in the device.

Android Phones

Android phone repairs will generally take between 3 and 5 business days to complete and 1 to 2 days to quote. The longer turnaround time for Android phones is due to there being so many different versions of Android phones that all have parts that are specific to that device, so they usually have to be ordered. Standard Samsung Galaxy phones that were manufactured in the last few years may have a quicker turnaround time.

Android Tablets, Kindle, and Windows Mobile

We may or may not be able to repair these devices. There are so many variations that we may not be able to get the parts or the repair would be cost prohibitive. Please check these devices in like you would a PC or Apple computer and refer to the turnaround times for those devices.

iPhones

iPhone screen and battery repairs can generally be completed within 1 to 2 business days after the customer confirms they would like the repair and they are okay with the price. We will try to get them a price quote for a screen or battery the same business day as they check in the device. Other iPhone repairs – such as the dock, camera, speaker, etc. – may have to be ordered and will have a longer turnaround time, usually of around 3 to 5 business days to complete and 1 to 2 days to quote, depending on the issue.

Retention Policy

If a computer is seemingly abandoned then the CRC will try to reach out and get in contact with the customer. After 60 days is they have not heard from the client the hardware will be recycled. Here is an example email that is sent to clients regarding the retention policy:

"Hello,
Your computer is ready for pickup from the Morgan Library Computer Repair Center. Please pick up your computer as soon as possible. All hardware remaining in our possession after 60 days of receiving this notification will be recycled, unless otherwise requested. We still haven't heard back from you with what you would like to have done with this computer.

MacBook Pro Repair for Video Issues

A small percentage of Mac Book Pros may have video issues that can be fixed for free through Apple Warranty. If the Mac Book is one of these models:

  • MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011)
  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2012)
  • MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2011)
  • MacBook Pro (17-inch Late 2011)
  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 15 inch, Early 2013)

and is experiencing one or more of these issues:

  • Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
  • No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on
  • Computer restarts unexpectedly

The computer may be able to have warranty work done to resolve these issues. Have the computer checked into the CRC to see if the repair will be covered under Apple's replacement plan. This service is available until December 31, 2016 or four years from its original date of sale, whichever is longer. More information about this program can be found here.

iPads

iPad screen and battery repairs can generally be completed within 2 to 3 business days after the customer confirms they would like the repair complete and they are ok with the price. We will try to get them a price quote the same or next business day (iPad repair prices differ greatly by model and generation – some have LCD and glass all in one, some have LCD and glass separate). Like iPhone repairs, other repairs will take additional turnaround time.

Items to check in

Only check in additional items if it is necessary for the repair. Cases and bags should never be checked in. PSUs are required for PC check ins and are only needed for Macs if the issue is possibly with the PSU.

Mac Hard Drive Cable Replacements

Apple now offers warranty hard drive cable replacements for 2012 13 inch MacBook Pros that were bought before January 2016. If a client comes in with a possible HD cable issue and they have this model of MacBook let them know that if a cable is the issue it will be replaced under warranty. We cannot guarantee that the issue is the cable and not the HD so be sure that people know that.

You can look up the serial number on the Apple warranty site to see what model the Mac is.

Other Devices

We do not repair other devices like monitors, printers, scanners, or other peripherals. If, however, a customer would like us to test an external keyboard or mouse for functionality, we will do that for the diagnostics fee and suggest and order a replacement keyboard or mouse for them. Apple keyboards and mice that are paired with an iMac/MacPro/MacMini may be covered under their warranty, but must be checked in with the computer they are paired with so we can determine their eligibility. For Apple Watches and Beats headphones the repair center may be able to facilitate whole-unit mail-in repairs but cannot repair those devices on site.
