551 West Pitkin Street
Designed by William C. Muchow & Associates, Inc. of Denver, the first phase of the Visual Arts Building opened in 1973. Phase l housed the ceramics and sculpture classes and it had been built by Lobar Inc. of Fort Collins. It was the first of two planned building projects designed to house, in one complex, the variety of classes offered by Department of Art.
On October 13, 1973, ground was broken for the second phase of the Visual Arts Building. Built by Livingston Construction Company of Fort Collins, Phase II was completed and opened for the spring quarter of 1975. This building was designed to house printmaking, graphic design, general art studies, silversmith work, art history, weaving, basic design, drawing, and art education. It also included gallery space and a visual resource area. On October 18, 1975, the formal dedication ceremony of the Visual Arts Building and the Clara A. Hatton Gallery took place. In December 1977, the State Board of Agriculture approved naming a room in the Visual Arts Building to honor Dr. Stanley G. Wold.
The Visual Arts Building serves as home to the Department of Art, the Clara A. Hatton Gallery, and the Perry N. Ragouzis Sculpture Courtyard. It serves as the host site for a variety of art exhibitions and public lectures each academic year. This sprawling one-story, concrete block structure is arranged as a series of wings connected by a central hallway. During the summer of 2013 a new entrance was constructed on the northwest corner of the building.
