Builder - C. E. Walker Construction Company of Denver

900 Oval Drive

Originally the Administration Building was scheduled to be built during the 1922-23 budget year.  But the fire of December 22, 1921, suddenly caused a desperate need for a replacement Chemistry Building which set the process of a new Administration Building back a couple of years.  Designed by Eugene G. Groves, construction work began in August 1923 and move-in took place in July and August 1924. Built to replace the cramped and aging facilities at Old Main, the Administration Building has housed the Office of the President since Charles A. Lory as well as a variety of administrative offices for the institution.

One of the most visually striking buildings on the campus, it is the oldest building, except for the nearby District Heating and Cooling Plant, that is still used for its original purpose. The classical Doric columns on the front of the building on the south end of the Oval give it an imposing presence as people come to meet with the top administrators of the Colorado State University System.

The building has always housed the Offices of the President and a variety of Vice Presidents, Deans and Directors.  Over the years it has also housed Cooperative Extension Service offices, several academic department offices, the telephone switchboard and budget office.

In 1981, a stair tower and elevator were added to the west end of the building to increase fire safety and enhance access to all floors of the building.
