Designed by Architects Edward L. Bunts and Floyd Lamar Kelsey of the Bunts and Kelsey Associates architectural firm, this facility was opened for the fall quarter of 1967 as a 12-apartment residence hall for up to 72 women. It was formally dedicated along with its neighbor, Durward Hall, on August 17, 1969. It was named to honor Miss Miriam Palmer who came to the College in 1904 and worked for 43 years. She achieved distinction as an internationally known entomologist, scientific illustrator and researcher.
In the fall of 1975, it became housing for international graduate students. In 1990, the Department of Housing and Food Service remodeled the building into their office headquarters. It was renamed “Palmer Center” at that time. The administrative offices of the Department of Housing and Dining Services still occupy this building and oversee the growing inventory of living units on the campus.
In the summer of 2017, the Towers Complex Thermal Plant was built just southwest of the Palmer Center. Located at 1007 West Laurel Street, this small building housed the control equipment for heating buildings on the northwest corner of the Main Campus.
